Little Portable Magic
I was in a meeting a few days ago when someone turned to me and asked, “Princess, what happened to you?” In his words, I was “on fire” and seemed like a completely different person.
I smiled but didn’t respond right away. When I did, I wanted to make it easy for him, so I said, “The Princess you knew yesterday is gone. I took a magic potion and evolved into a new version of myself.”
It sounds simple enough, but let me take you back. For those who knew me in school, you can attest that I was resilient, reliable, passionate, intelligent, bold, and creative. However, many only recently got to witness a new version of me.
We can’t fully unpack who we are in one go. I share this to remind you that life is a journey, and bold actions are necessary for reinvention.
For over 18 months, I buried myself, digging for gold. Nothing seemed to change until I took that magic potion. As a pharmacist, I know that taking any medication outside its prescribed dose can be harmful. In this case, I was advised to take one tablet a day for ten days and, if symptoms persisted, to continue for an additional two days. I followed the regimen, and boom! My eyes opened, and I began to see myself again through self-reflection.
My first realization was painful:
I had lost myself to the opinions of others—what they thought of me. I never realized how deeply that had affected me. I used to be so bold, but I was not immune to external judgments.
I forgot to live my life on my own terms—unaided and unapologetically. I neglected what brought me true joy and purpose. It wasn’t just about sipping tea and minding my own business; I had passions like writing. Did I mention I was the editor-in-chief back in university?
I lost my authentic voice, trying to fit in and sound like everyone else, often sugar-coating my words.
After a few months of taking the magic potion, I felt a shift. The symptoms faded, but the scars remained. I was still conscious of myself and the fear of others’ opinions (FOPO). I completed the extended regimen, and over time, the magic kicked in—boom! Transformation.
At this point, you might be wondering what I was taking. In the words of Stephen King, “Books are uniquely portable magic.” Combining books with a vibrant community creates a powerful accelerator for greatness.
Reading a chapter a day from some of the best global and international bestsellers on business and leadership has been life-changing. I’ve been blessed to connect with a community of incredible individuals—business enthusiasts, owners, seasoned authors, C-suite executives, and administrators. It’s been magical to watch the transformation process. While it may not happen overnight, the journey to self-mastery and motivation is worthwhile.
